Sri Lanka's Gem, Jewelry Exports +29% to $547M

RAPAPORT... The National Gem & Jewellery Authority (NGJA) of Sri Lanka reported that the nation's gem, diamond and jewelry exports in 2011 rose 29 percent year on year to $547.2 million. 

Revenue from diamonds represented the bulk of the figure at $407.5 million, a rate of growth that was also 29 percent. Blue sapphire was in great demand during 2011, too. Sri Lanka exported 330,318 carats of the blue stones with a value of $53.2 million.

Thailand was the top buyer of jewelry and stones from Sri Lanka at $20.8 million, followed by the U.S. at $20.3 million.  Hong Kong accounted for $19.4 million, rounding out the top three.
