Industry Mourns Death of Jeweler James Avery

Founder, 96, launched brand from a two-car garage in 1954.

RAPAPORT... Texas jeweler James Avery, creator of a popular brand that bears his name, has died at 96.

“We are forever grateful to Mr. Avery for giving us the opportunity to be a part of his dream,” the retailer said in a Twitter post on Monday. “He was a dynamic, creative and generous man who touched the lives of many people during his lifetime through his work, his art and his giving spirit. His contributions will always be remembered as the company continues to build upon his artistic legacy.”

Avery began his business in 1954 in a two-car garage with a $250 budget. He handcrafted all the pieces in his first line, which was predominantly Christian-themed. His designs showcase clean and fluid styles, according to the company website.

“I strive to keep designs from being contrived, cluttered or cute,” Avery once said. “The challenge is to keep things simple.”

In 1988, Avery received a San Antonio Entrepreneur of the Year award. He retired in 2007, and was succeeded by his son Chris as CEO of the company.
