RAPAPORT... Shlomo Moussaieff, diamantaire and jeweler to royalty, died earlier this week at 92 years of age.

Moussaieff was born in Jerusalem in 1925 to a Jewish family with roots tracing to Bukhara, a city located today in Uzbekistan. His father was a prominent jewelry dealer in Jerusalem, who reportedly threw Moussaieff out of the family home after he failed to show promise as a Torah scholar.

Moussaieff moved to London in 1963 and opened his first jewelry shop on London's Park Lane. His business grew rapidly from the late 1960s onwards, after he developed a reputation for meeting the jewelry needs of wealthy Arab patrons from the Persian Gulf. He was known for buying famous colored diamonds, such as the Moussaieff Red Diamond, a trilliant-cut, 5.11-carat, fancy red diamond.

The deceased is survived by his wife and business partner, Aliza Moussaieff, and his three daughters, Dorrit, Tamar and Sharon. Dorrit is also well known in her current role as the First Lady of Iceland.
