RAPAPORT... The Birmingham Assay Office in the U.K. debuted its ''Help With Hallmarks'' app for the iPhone, iPad and Android.

The app  helps users to work out and identify the date letter on precious metal, jewelry and silverware. The app includes date letters from the 11 key assay offices in the U.K. going back as far as the year 1544.

The app also offers tools for retailers, collectors, antique and second hand dealers, silver experts, valuers and students as well as members of the public who have an interest in historic hallmarks.
