American Express OPEN Launches 'Big Break' Contest for Small Business

Small businesses may enter through the group's Facebook page.

RAPAPORT... American Express OPEN launched a contest designed to help transform the way small businesses use Facebook and social media. The campaign dubbed “Facebook Big Break for Small Business,”  awards five U.S. companies with an all expense-paid trip to Facebook headquarters in Palo Alto, California, where they will take part in an two-day, one-on-one training session on how to maximize the power of Facebook to better market their products and services and target new customers. 

Each of the five company winners will receive a consultation on their current use of the Facebook, as well as personal training on best practices for using Facebook pages, advertisements, and social plug-ins.  The selected small businesses will also get a $20,000 cash prize to help drive their social media strategy and promote growth. The Facebook training sessions will be documented and appear on OPEN's Facebook page.

“Small business owners are experts at customer engagement, but the tools and techniques for finding and engaging customers are quickly evolving," said Julie Fajgenbaum, vice president of brand and customer marketing for American Express OPEN. "It's critical that business owners understand these new channels and platforms, which is why we are collaborating with Facebook to educate on the benefits of engaging customers through social media and provide real, tangible tips on how to do it effectively."

Judges overseeing the contest include Laura Fink, of American Express; Adele Cooper of Facebook; Guy Kawasaki of Alltop; and John Battelle of Federated Media. They will evaluate contestants on their commitment to business and growth, overall social media need, and energy and enthusiasm.  The contest will also award 10 runner-up companies $2,500 in Facebook advertising.

To enter the Facebook Big Break for Small Business from American Express OPEN, small business owners need to visit http://www.facebook.com/OPEN and submit answers to a short questionnaire describing how they would utilize the competition's winnings to better their business.
