Black Friday Sales Gain from Thanksgiving Closures

Consumer foot traffic was flat on Black Friday halting the downtrend seen in previous years as more retailers stayed shut on Thanksgiving.

While U.S. stores have opened in the past on the Thanksgiving holiday, doing so took business away from the following day’s traditional holiday season launch. This year it was different, data company ShopperTrak reported. Apple, Costco, H&M, Home Depot, Nordstrom and T.J.Maxx are among the U.S. retailers which stayed closed on the holiday, according to dealnews.com.

“We found that Thanksgiving Day store openings were increasingly pulling shopper visits from Black Friday over the past few years,” said Brian Field, ShopperTrak’s senior director of advisory services. “This year, we saw a reversal of that trend, which can be attributed to several factors including fewer store openings on Thanksgiving Day, as well as online shopping.”

Shopper visits to bricks-and-mortar stores declined 1 percent year on year across Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday.

Black Friday ranks among the 10 busiest shopping days of the year. Another of those, Super Saturday, or the last Saturday before Christmas, will take place a little earlier than usual on December 17 given Christmas Eve falls on a Saturday night this year.

Separate data from Comscore showed sales from desktop computers climbed 17 percent to $1.29 billion on Thanksgiving and jumped 19 percent to $1.97 billion on Black Friday.
