ShopperTrak Notes Spike in Thanksgiving Day Shopping

RAPAPORT... ShopperTrak noted shifting shopping patterns over Thanksgiving weekend as more stores opened again on what typically was a non-retail day, and majors opened even earlier than they had in 2013.  Store visits on Thanksgiving Day rose 27.3 percent year on year, while store visits on Black Friday fell approximately 5.6 percent, ShopperTrak reported.

“We've seen an increase in Thanksgiving shopping over the past few years at the expense of Black Friday,” said Bill Martin, the founder of ShopperTrak, a provider of location-based analytics. “More stores are opening, and earlier, which has caused a shift in shopping patterns.”

ShopperTrak estimated that total sales during the weekend were slightly down from 2013 levels, with promotions and buster deals enticing consumers to stores as early as possible. Martin added there is still time for growth with seven of the busiest 10 sales days of the year to come, including “Super Saturday,” which falls on the weekend before Christmas, and  he predicts that will become the top spending day of the year.
