RAPAPORT... The winners of the annual Couture Design Awards were announced as part of a gala evening event held on June 4 in Las Vegas. There were 140 entries and the competition was judged by a panel of experts that included consumer magazine editors, key retailers and fellow designers. The retailers present for Couture were involved in choosing the “People’s Choice Award.” The program also included the first-ever juried watch competition in the United States.

“Turning the Couture Design Awards into a juried event elevates it to an even more prestigious level,” said Jennifer Gandia, owner of Greenwich Jewelers in Manhattan and one of the six judges on the awards panel. “I was extremely impressed with the talent represented by this year’s entries and thrilled to work with the other judges in this process.”

In addition that evening, the Couture show celebrated the National Jeweler Hall of Fame recipients, Jim Rosenheim, of Tiny Jewel Box in Washington, D.C., Mark Light, president of Sterling Jewelers Inc., and Lawrence Bock, president of  Bachendorf’s Jewelers. The Human Spirit Award  was bestowed to Cathy Tivol of Tivol in Kansas City, Missouri. Watch Journal™, the presenter of Couture Time, also announced the winners of the Couture Time competition. Of the 20 entries, there was one winner in each of three categories: Watch Architecture, Technical Excellence and Innovation.

“The success of the Design Awards program exceeded our expectations,” said Lee Arevian, director of business development for Couture. “It is clear that the Couture community supports and looks forward to participating in this program, and it is poised to further foster creativity among our designers and grow in importance as a signature event during Jewelry Market Week.”
