Hong Kong Data Shows Declines Across Import and Exports of Rough and Polished

RAPAPORT... Hong Kong's polished diamond imports decreased 4 percent year on year to $9.3 billion during the first half of 2015, according to the Diamond Federation of Hong Kong, China Ltd.

By volume, polished imports dropped 9 percent to 9.635 million carats. Polished exports and re-exports fell 2 percent to $6.6 billion during the first six months of the year. As a result net polished imports dropped 7 percent to $2.7 billion.

Rough diamond imports to Hong Kong slid 20 percent to $917.3 million during the half. By volume, rough imports fell 32 percent to 5.318 million carats. Rough diamond exports dropped 22 percent to $946 million, leaving net imports with a deficit of $28.7 million compared with a deficit of $64.4 million a year ago.

During the first six months of the year, Hong Kong's net diamond account, representing total diamond imports minus exports, dropped 7 percent to $2.7 billion.
