RAPAPORT... Botswana’s diamond exports rose 2 percent year on year to $159.4 million in December, according to the Bank of Botswana. Despite the slight increase during the month, the data showed that exports for the fourth quarter fell 33 percent to $632.8 million.

For the year 2011, however, Botswana’s diamond exports increased 40 percent to $4.5 billion and accounted for approximately 81 percent of the country’s total exports. Botswana is the world’s largest producer of diamonds by value contributing about two-thirds of De Beers total output.

The bank’s data is a representative sample of the country's full diamond trade and is sourced from the Diamond Trading Company Botswana, Leo Schachter Botswana, Teemane Manufacturing Co., and the Central Statistics Office.
