RAPAPORT...The International Colored Gemstone Association (ICA) kicked-off its 14th biennial congress today in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The three-day meeting was being hosted by the Brazilian Gems & Jewelry Trade Association at the Sofitel hotel on Copacabana Beach through May 4.
Opening day discussions were devoted to exploring Brazil and its role in the gemstone industry. Brazil produces 100 different gemstone types and exports about 80 percent of production, but its local market for color gems continues to grow along with the country's emerging middle class. ICA congress presentations today highlighted innovative cutting techniques and the unique ways in which Brazil's jewelry manufacturers were using their native stones in design.
